Getting Wedding-Ready: Your Hair and Makeup Trial
Hey there, lovely brides-to-be! So, you're in the thick of wedding planning, and one of the exciting stops on your bridal journey is the hair and makeup trial. We're here to guide you through what to expect during this pre-wedding beauty excitement, when to book it, and how to make the most of this essential part of your wedding preparations.
What Exactly is a Hair and Makeup Trial?
Picture this: a hair and makeup trial is like a test run for your bridal look. It's the chance to partner up with a professional stylist and makeup artist, try out different styles and products. Some brides will plan it on the day they have a dress fitting to get a truer picture of the overall look.
When's the Right Time for Your Trial?
Timing is everything! There are so many factors to think about when trying to organise your trial. As a rule of thumb we recommended trying to have your trial around 4 months before the big day. Now as we get into wedding season (April – September) our availability, especially weekends, become very limited. As a team we will try to organise summer brides trials in the months of January to March to ensure you have a selection of dates to choose from. If your wedding is towards the end of the year we will probably aim to do this just before the summer season begins. On some occasions, brides are travelling from overseas or it was a last minute booking means getting a trial in before the big day just isn’t an option. In this case we will have a Zoom call prior to the big day to make sure we understand your look and brief and to put you at ease too!
What to Expect During Your Trial:
1. The Chat: Your stylist will kick things off with a good old chat. This is your time to spill the beans on your vision, show off inspiration pics, and discuss any specific preferences or worries. Have a look at our Pinterest board for some inspo pics!
2. Try On: You'll get to experiment with different hairstyles and makeup looks. Your artist will share ideas and work their magic to create a customised look that brings out your beauty.
3. Feedback Session: Keep it real. Tell your stylist what you like and what you're not vibing with during the trial. My go-to line is, ‘you are not going to offend me, this is your wedding day, you need to feel comfortable and beautiful’! Honestly, we want you to look and most importantly feel your best so we can make tweaks to make sure you're thrilled with the result.
4. Snapshot Time: Don't forget to take loads of photos from all angles and lighting conditions. This helps you see how your look translates on camera.
Getting Ready for Your Trial:
1. Insightful Inspiration: Get a collection of photos that show off bridal looks you're crushing on. Pinterest and bridal mags are treasure troves.
2. Skin-Care Love: Ensure your skin is well-hydrated and in tip-top shape. Start a skincare routine in advance to tackle any concerns.
3. Hair Care: Keep your locks happy and trimmed. Chat with your stylist about any hair colour changes before the trial.
4. Accessories Alert: If you have accessories like a veil or hairpins, bring them along to see how they jazz up your hairstyle (keep your eyes peeled for the coming months).
Final Words:
Your hair and makeup trial is your time to fine-tune your bridal beauty. Booking it in advance gives you wiggle room to make adjustments and work closely with your stylist to make your dream look come true. Remember to speak up, give feedback, and put your trust in the pros to make your bridal vision a reality. With a successful trial, you'll confidently walk down the aisle, ready to celebrate in style!
Wedding morning timings: From your bridal hair and makeup stylists.
Hey there! Ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes of a wedding morning from a bridal hair and makeup artist's perspective? Now every wedding morning is different and your stylists will discuss rough timings on the day of your trial. Lots of factors come into play when creating your schedule; what time the ceremony is, how many are having hair and makeup done, are you getting ready at the venue, the list goes on… That is why we provide you with a schedule in the lead up to the big day to add some structure to the morning, avoiding any delays as well as direction for your stylists and bridal party!
Arrival and set up
We will always arrive around 15 minutes before the start time on the schedule to find you and set up our kits and give you a ‘Happy wedding day!’ hug! To make this as seamless as possible we ask that space has been cleared so we can start straight away. Makeup artists will always try and be near as much natural light as possible, if there is a table nearby great! Hair stylists will want to be near a plug, have a low back chair and somewhere to put all of their kit.
When in the chair
For most of your bridal party we will allocate around 45 minutes per person per service. Now, if they have mermaid hair down to their lower back, this may take a little longer. So, please be sure to tell your bridal hair stylist the length and styles they want before the big day. Often, if you have booked Margot + Lace for both hair and makeup, it is likely we will alternate and we have worked together many times so we know roughly how long each stylist takes.
For the brides hair and makeup we will allocate one hour per service just to spend that little bit longer on skin and hair prep and giving you a real chance to sit, relax and take in the morning.
Retouches
Some bridal prep starts at 6am which means whoever goes first might be fretting that it won’t last. We will be with you right until you walk down the aisle, so we are there for retouches of hair and makeup. We will schedule for retouches to be one hour before your ceremony. I know what you are thinking, ‘that is ages away from when we leave’! When we say the last hour of your wedding morning is redundant, it simply doesn’t exist! There is always the last minute chaos, getting into dresses, making sure the boob tape is in the right place and of course you need to meet the registrars 15 minutes before your ceremony. This is not factoring in if you need to travel to the venue! It is nice to have that little bit of extra time to do any reveals, photos and one last minute toilet break!
Final thoughts: Being part of a bride's journey on her wedding morning is an absolute privilege. We create a schedule to make sure the day runs as smoothly as possible to make sure you can truly enjoy the getting ready part. Whether we are working as a Margot + Lace team or you have a separate hair or makeup artist, feel free to send our schedule onto them and we will work collaboratively!
Wedding Makeup tips for those with dry skin
Hello gorgeous brides, bridesmaids or wedding guests -to-be!
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! As you prepare for this special day, you'll want your makeup to be as flawless and radiant. If you're dealing with dry skin, fear not! We've got you covered with some makeup tips that'll keep you glowing and fabulous throughout your wedding day.
Hydration is Key
Start your makeup routine with a deeply hydrating moisturiser. Dry skin tends to lack natural oils and moisture, so using a rich, hydrating moisturiser will create a smooth canvas for makeup application. Allow the moisturiser to absorb fully before proceeding to the next step. Charlotte Tilbury Magic Cream is a real winner!
Prime for a Smooth Base
Opt for a hydrating and illuminating primer. This will create a smooth base for your makeup, ensuring that it stays in place and doesn't settle into dry patches. A good primer will also give your skin a radiant glow, which is perfect for a bridal look. Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base will transform your makeup application!
Foundation with a Dewy Finish
Choose a foundation that offers a dewy finish to give your skin a luminous and hydrated look. Avoid matte foundations as they can emphasise dryness. Apply the foundation evenly using a damp beauty sponge for a natural and seamless finish. Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation is a staple in our kit.
Cream-Based Products
Incorporate cream-based blushes, bronzers, and highlighters into your makeup routine. Cream products blend well on dry skin and provide a dewy, fresh appearance. Apply these products using your fingers or a makeup sponge to achieve a natural, radiant look.
Avoid Powder Overload
Powders and dry skin aren't the best match. Use them sparingly, if at all, to avoid emphasising dry patches. Less is definitely more in this case. If necessary, lightly dust translucent powder only on areas prone to excess shine.
Eye Makeup Tips
For the eyes, choose creamy eyeshadows that offer hydration and a shimmering finish. Apply a hydrating eye primer to prevent creasing and keep your eyeshadow in place. Finish with a few coats of a lengthening and defining mascara or false lashes.
Lip Care
Exfoliate your lips before applying any lip products to remove dead skin. Opt for moisturising lipstick or lip gloss with hydrating ingredients to keep your lips soft and supple.
Setting Spray for Lasting Hydration
After completing your makeup, use a setting spray that provides a dewy finish and locks in moisture. This will help your makeup last longer while keeping your skin hydrated throughout the day.
Pre-Wedding Skincare Routine
In the weeks leading up to the wedding, focus on a good skincare routine to improve the overall health and hydration of your skin. Consider using hydrating masks and serums to boost moisture levels.
Your trial
Before the big day, schedule a makeup trial with our makeup artist. Discuss your concerns and preferences to ensure you achieve the look you desire.
Remember, confidence is the key to looking and feeling beautiful on your wedding day. Embrace your natural beauty and let your radiant glow shine through!
Your Wedding Day Makeup: False Lashes or Au Naturel?
Your wedding day is one of the most important and memorable days of your life, and you want to look and feel your absolute best. Makeup plays a crucial role in enhancing your features and making you feel confident and beautiful. One element that many brides consider is whether to opt for false lashes or stick to their natural lashes. In this blog, we discuss the options to help you make an informed decision for your wedding day makeup.
Individual or strip?
When we say false lashes, we tend to offer individual cluster lashes. This is because with these we can custom build lashes to suit your preference, they are also a good introduction to false lashes if you are new to them! They also tend to be more lightweight that strip lashes and if one happens to fall off, you still have your complete look!
Longevity
False lashes can last throughout the day and night, maintaining their appearance even during tears of joy and laughter. So if you think you’re going to be a crier, this could be a great option!
Photography
In photos, false lashes can make your eyes pop and add that extra oomph to your bridal look. You can choose for a more subtle or dramatic look but it will make sure your eyes are a focal point on your big day.
Embracing that natural look
Now, a lot of our brides believe that having false lashes will mean their makeup is no longer natural. We understand, but, we can make the lashes suit your eye shape, eye makeup and overall look. The unknown can be scary so it is worth trying them out in your trial, you never know, you might love them!
Lash Lift and Lash Extensions
There are other options for lashes including Lash Lifts and Lash Extensions, but we recommend trying these in advance and communicating this with your makeup artist. Lash Lifts are effectively perming your lashes to make them curlier and tinting them. Lash Extensions are longer lasting than the individual lashes we use. The process involves adding lengthening and/or thickening lashes you’re your natural lash using a strong glue. This is because sometimes, a client has asked for us to add individual lashes on top of lash lift which can sometimes be very difficult.
Keeping it natural
If you think that adding false lashes will be too much for you on your wedding day, that is absolutely fine! Mascara and a soft eyeliner can help bring the drama! Just a side note, there is only so much mascara and pressure we can add to your eye, so if you know how you like your mascara make sure you mention this to your makeup artist.
Final words: Ultimately, it's your call! Consider what makes you feel comfortable, keeping in mind your comfort and the look you're going for. If you're on the fence, you could opt for individual false lashes for a subtle but enhanced effect.
Better yet, chat with a makeup artist! We’ve got the expertise to help you nail the balance between enhancing your beauty and staying true to yourself.
Whatever you choose, the most important thing is to rock your look with confidence.
Mastering Mother of the Bride + Groom Makeup
Hello beautiful mothers of the bride and groom-to-be! As a wedding makeup artist who understands the significance of looking and feeling fabulous for your daughter's (or son’s) big day, I'm here to share my expertise and guide you on achieving a stunning makeup look that enhances your natural beauty and complements the occasion.
Consult a Professional Makeup Artist:
Why not make it an occasion in itself! If you are not sure whether you want makeup for the big day, come along with the bride and have a trial too. We can help you understand your skin type, suggest suitable products, and create a makeup look that aligns with your personal style, enhances your natural features whilst still looking like you! Collaboration and communication are key to creating a tailored makeup look
Focus on Skincare:
Start your makeup routine with a well-prepped canvas. Invest in a good skincare regimen to ensure your skin is hydrated, smooth, and ready for makeup application. Cleanse, moisturize, and use a primer to create a smooth base.
A Good Foundation:
Now when this foundation word is mentioned it can cause concern and worry that the makeup might look cakey and too much. We can opt for a light coverage foundation, a CC cream or ever spot conceal to ensure you complexion how you want it. The goal is to even out your skin tone and create a beautiful canvas for the rest of the makeup.
Accentuate Your Eyes:
Your eyes can be your focal point, so give them the attention they deserve. Use neutral or subtle eyeshadows that enhance your eye shape and colour. If you want to add a something a little different why not add a little sparkle. To create a softer eye look, consider browns for the eyeline and mascara (waterproof of course)!
Subtle Cheek and Lip Colours:
Choose blush and lipstick shades that complement your complexion. Opt for subtle hues that add a touch of colour without overpowering your features. Cream blushes and satin-finish lipsticks offer a youthful, radiant glow. Make sure to use a lip liner to stop the lipstick bleeding and to stop your lipstick from smudging.
Set Your Makeup:
To make your makeup last from the 'I do's' to the last dance, we'll use a setting spray. This final touch will ensure your makeup remains flawless and picture-perfect throughout the celebration.
Final thoughts: Your children’s wedding is an occasion to celebrate and cherish. We will work together to create a makeup look that accentuates your beauty and radiates confidence.

Sometimes simplicity is key. Straighten your short hair for a sleek and sophisticated appearance. Either have it framing your face or pulled back to highlight your beautiful bridal/bridesmaid makeup.

Every bridal stylists dream: The ultimate prep rooms.
A bridal prep room might be something you don’t think about when planning your wedding, to some brides it is one of those things that is low on the priority list and that is fine! However, as bridal hair and makeup stylists, this is one of the most important. You may not think it, but having the right space on the morning of your wedding can be your saving grace. Whether you have a large bridal party and need space or want more of a luxury prep room to get your hair and makeup done, it is something to consider. In this blog we will talk about some of our favourite bridal prep rooms that we regularly visit. Now this is limited and we know this, but these are tried and tested from our perspective.
Hyde House
The bridal prep room at Hyde House is a spacious and beautifully thought out. Designed with the bride's comfort in mind, it offers ample space for the entire bridal party to get ready together. There is so much natural light that fills the room which makes the room feel huge! Now if on your wedding day, it is slightly less ‘light’ then they have thought about this eventuality. There are four stations where you hair and makeup can be done with the most perfect vanity lights and mirror.
When you are not having your hair and makeup done you can take a seat on their sofas, graze on one of their breakfast platters or help yourself to tea and coffee and their drinks station. One of the best things about this is the privacy. Located away from the hustle and bustle of the main venue where your guests arrive, it provides a secluded and tranquil space for the bride to prepare and soak in the excitement. Not to mention it is a great space to keep your bags or leave your makeup touch up kit for just before your wedding breakfast!
Kingscote Barn
The bridal prep room at Kingscote Barn embraces the venue's rustic ambiance while offering an elegant and sophisticated setting. It used to be accommodation which means it has all of the amenities for you and your bridal party. The team at Kingscote have put some serious thought into the design and have provided ample space to get ready in. There are seating areas, a large kitchen, separate dressing area and space dedicated for hair and makeup stations (our dream)!
Their bridal prep room offers a peaceful retreat for the bride to relax and indulge in the excitement of the day. Just far enough away to not be seen but also close enough to look at your guests outfits through the blinds! We are sure you have seen their incredible flower wallpaper as the backdrop to many bridal prep photos, it is even more impressive in person! Injecting colour and vibrancy to your morning.
Lapstone Barn
Like the others, we have visited Lapstone Barn and it’s Hayloft many times. The décor follows the rest of the venue, with their wooden beams and a classic and timeless feel. Although not a dedicated hair and makeup station we always seem to assume the same positions. Makeup will be in front of their large window, which brings in the most gorgeous lighting. Whilst hair will usually be at the back of the room near the plug sockets and the full length mirror!
Whilst you or your bridal party are getting prepped, there is enough space in there to relax. Even better, there is a separate changing area where you can out your dress on ready for that big reveal! If you are a bride that likes to be present in the prep but wants to know how the ceremony set up is going, this is the place to be. The Hayloft is situated literally above the main venue so you can delegate your bridal party if you need to do something AND you literally have to go a few steps to walk down the aisle!
Lyde Court
Lyde court bridal prep room is like no other! They have named it ‘The White Room’ which couldn’t be more fitting for your wedding morning. It's like they've mixed the olden days with comfort. It is a cozy hideaway for you and your bridal party to get hair and makeup done. Like the name suggests, the ceiling and the floors are white which offers the best canvas for your photos and offers a natural light to have you makeup done.
The room has big windows that look out onto the gardens (which are seriously impressive) and they are just a few steps away so you can have those pyjama and prosecco photo shots! It is quirky and a one-of-a-kind bridal prep space, as well as following the theme of the venue perfectly.

Not only are they super friendly but, clearly, they are all about making your day feel like YOUR day. We cannot wait to be back here more in 2024!
Elmore Court
The Elmore Court Coach House is fab when it comes to bridal prep, I mean you have a whole house! With its charming blend of rustic and modern elements, the Coach House creates the perfect atmosphere for getting ready for you and all of your bridal party. It offer a homely feel with ample natural light streaming in through the windows sets the ideal backdrop for hair and makeup, and the spacious layout means there's plenty of room for the bride and party to relax and enjoy those pre-wedding moments.
Also, new for this year, they have built some incredible Treehouses! We hope to be able to have a look around these next year.
Final thoughts: Whether you have booked your venue already and have seen these or you haven’t even thought about where you will be on the morning of your wedding, always have the prep room at the back of your mind. There are so many amazing venues out there with equally brilliant prep spaces, we can’t wait to discover more!
Your wedding week has begun: What you can be doing in the week leading up to your wedding.
The week leading up to your wedding is a whirlwind of emotions and last-minute preparations. It's a time filled with excitement, nervousness, and joy as you approach one of the most significant days of your life. To help you navigate this crucial period with ease, we've put together a list of the top things we think you could do in the week leading up to your wedding.
Confirm Last-Minute Details
Make a final checklist of all the wedding details, from supplier arrangements to seating plans. Confirm timings, addresses, and any special requests you've made with your suppliers, ensuring a seamless experience on the big day. Also make sure you have each of your suppliers contact details and share them with the wedding party!
Delegate Responsibilities
You've spent months planning, so now's the time to delegate tasks to reliable friends or family members. Let them handle any last-minute errands or troubleshooting so you can focus on enjoying the final days before your wedding.
Pack for the Big Day
Prepare a bag with essentials you'll need on your wedding day – your dress, shoes, accessories, a touch-up kit, and any sentimental items. Having everything organised will reduce stress and help you feel more in control. Relay this onto your bridal party and what they need to bring, as well as groom etc. If you are getting ready in a different location to where you are staying, put these in a separate bag so you can easily transfer and not have to do this on the morning.
Break in Your Wedding Shoes
Breaking in your wedding shoes is a step that's often overlooked but crucial for your comfort on the big day. A week before your wedding, start wearing your shoes around the house for short periods. This will help soften any stiff areas and allow your feet to adjust to the fit. If you're concerned about potential discomfort, try using gel inserts in areas that might rub against your skin. By taking the time to break in your shoes, you'll be able to dance the night away with ease and grace, ensuring your focus remains on the celebration rather than your feet.
Steam Your Wedding Dress
Your wedding dress is the centrepiece, and ensuring it looks flawless is a top priority. About a week before your wedding, steam your dress to eliminate any wrinkles that may have developed during storage or transportation. If you're not confident in steaming it yourself, consider taking it to a professional cleaner or tailor who specialises in wedding attire. Remember to hang the dress in a safe place after steaming, using a padded hanger to maintain its shape. This simple step will guarantee that you do not have the stresses of this during your wedding morning prep.
Stay Hydrated
As you approach the final countdown to your wedding, keeping yourself well-hydrated is a small yet super important thing to remember. With all the excitement and running around, it's easy to let drinking water slip your mind. But trust me, sipping on water throughout the day can work wonders. It'll help keep your energy up, make your skin glow (perfect for those wedding photos and bridal makeup!), and even manage those pre-wedding jitters.
The day after
Now I know it may seem like e are wishing the day away but we can almost guarantee you will not want to think about this when you are eating your first breakfast as newly-weds. Have a think about what you will do with any decorations or props you have provided for your day, or have a plan of removing them (better yet, delegate someone)! Often your wedding coordinator will help with this, but it helps to have an idea who is taking what!
Spend Quality Time Together
Amidst the chaos, don't forget the reason for this celebration – your love for each other. Take some moments to enjoy each other's company, reminisce about your journey so far, and create new memories. With that, don't forget to pencil in some well-deserved relaxation time.
Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Bridal Makeup Artist
As a makeup artist, our days are filled with a delightful blend of beauty, controlled chaos, and laughter. While the world sees the glamorous side of being a makeup artist, there's a secret world of behind-the-scenes moments that add a touch of humour to my daily adventures.
Early Mornings and Caffeine Fix
Let's face it, early mornings can be tough for anyone, including makeup artists. My day often starts with a bleary-eyed stumble towards the coffee machine. Picture me, half-asleep and sporting bedhead, desperately seeking that magical elixir of life to transform me into a functioning makeup artist. Coffee in hand, I'm ready to tackle the day with style and a caffeine-fuelled smile.
The Makeup Kit Conundrum
Ah, the beloved makeup kit. It's like Mary Poppins' bag—no matter how much I organise and streamline it, it always seems to contain an endless array of products. I swear there's a magical makeup gnome hiding in there, adding more shades of lipstick and eyeshadow when I'm not looking. Not to mention the constant sanitising and cleaning, sanitising and cleaning, sanitis- you get the idea.
Makeup therap-artist
As a makeup artist, I'm not just there to apply makeup—I'm also a therapist, confidante, and comedian. When you are in my chair, this is the time you cannot move for about one hour so I will do my absolute best to settle any nerves whether that is through just general chit chat, a good gossip or organising the bedlam unfolding behind you.
Makeup mishaps and quick fixes
Every makeup artist has faced the dreaded makeup mishap at least once. From an overzealous mascara wand from the dreaded sneezing fit to unintentional overlining on the lips because I decided to ask you a question right as I started applying, these little surprises keep me on my toes. But fear not! We will wait right up until you leave to walk down the aisle to make sure you are picture perfect.
The final look
Considering I have met you less than a year ago you can almost guarantee that I will be the corner crying like a baby at your final reveal’s. Don’t worry about me, I have been told this is normal from a practical stranger?! I will be armed with the tissues!
Final words: Behind the scenes, we navigate through the chaos with a smile and a touch of humour. From caffeinated mornings to lipstick acrobatics, it's these light-hearted moments that make being a makeup artist so much fun. So, as you prepare for your own wedding day, rest assured that I'll be there, armed and ready to make you look and feel absolutely fabulous.
Navigating the morning of your Wedding.
Hey there, lovely readers! Today, we want to share our thoughts and experiences from our Margot and Lace stylists about the morning of a typical wedding day. As bridal hair stylists and makeup artists we have been to hundreds of wedding mornings, so we think we have some great tips to ensure your special morning runs as smoothly as possible.
Surround yourself with Positivity
You have asked your nearest and dearest to be part of your bridal party for a reason. If you choose for them to be with you in the morning for the prep make sure they bring the laughter, the inside jokes, and enough coffee (or fizz) to fuel a small village. Having your best friends and family around will help turn those nervous butterflies into joyous ones. In between having your hair and makeup done, having your pictures taken and opening any gifts, make sure you are chatting, laughing, and just soak in the great vibes with a great playlist! If you're a bride-to-be, make sure your bridal party is on point – they'll keep your spirits high!
Prep like a Pro
Here's the thing about wedding mornings – they can get pretty hectic. So, planning is your secret weapon. A couple of weeks before the big day make sure you have your schedule of the day down and share this with your bridal party. Top Tip, save this as your phone lock screen so everyone has access to it so you are not being pulled in every direction. At Margot and Lace, we will put together a schedule for your styling, so that’s one less thing to think about! Lay out your dress, accessories, shoes and anything you might photographed the night before. Another job that can be done the night before is steaming the dresses! This always takes longer than anticipated and honestly there isn’t much more soul crushing than after you have styled a bridesmaid hair and makeup and you hear the words ‘ I’m going to steam my dress now’…
Eating is not cheating
Amidst the excitement, it's easy to forget to eat. But don't make that mistake! A hangry bride is not a happy bride. Have a nutritious breakfast that gives you energy for the day ahead. And don't forget to hydrate – you'll need it for all those happy tears and endless smiles. Some venues will offer to put a breakfast spread on so it is one less thing for you to think about.
Cards and gifts
This is a lovely picture perfect moment but make sure you factor this into the morning of your wedding. Often, this is overlooked and one bridesmaid is either having her hair done, the photographer is with the groom and you’ve just opened a real tear-jerker after your makeup. Our suggestion is that you do this either right at the beginning of the morning or half way through, not just before you are walking down the aisle.
Delegate and Breathe
This one is for my fellow control freaks – learn to delegate. You've got a team of people who want to help – let them! Assign tasks like main point of contact for the photographer, gathering next in line for hair or makeup, and handling any last-minute hiccups to someone you trust. This will free up your mind to focus on the beautiful moments. Do this so you can have time to breath and remind yourself that this day is about celebrating love and happiness.
Embrace Imperfection
Finally, remember that perfection is overrated. A small mishap or a minor glitch won't define your day. In fact, those are the stories you'll be laughing about years down the line. So, if your flower girl decides to go barefoot or if the wind plays havoc with your hair, roll with it. These unplanned moments often become the most cherished memories.
Every wedding morning is different but they should all be enjoyed experienced to the full. So, to all you brides-to-be out there, take a deep breath, embrace the organised chaos, and remember that this day is about celebrating your love story. Keep those positive vibes flowing, delegate like a pro, and above all, be present in every moment.
Our top pick foundations for creating that flawless base on your wedding day

It's like your skin, but way more fabulous. Perfect for showing off that bridal glow that everyone will be talking about. So you're after that natural radiance, but you also need that foundation to last on your wedding day? NARS has got you covered, literally. This foundation gives you that gorgeous glow and stays put all day and night. Build it up or keep it light, either way, you're going to look stunning. Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Foundation.
Often when we have trials, brides will ask for the Charlotte Tilbury look. This foundation is a firm favourite at Margot and Lace! This foundation is all about that natural, "your skin but better" vibe. It's lightweight and buildable, so you can dial up the coverage to hide any last-minute stress-induced blemishes. Plus, it's infused with ingredients that give your skin a healthy, luminous glow. If you're after that romantic and timeless bridal look, this foundation deserves a special spot on your vanity.
Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation.
Keeping it in the Tilbury family, this one is like Photoshop in a bottle, seriously. If you're aiming for a flawless finish that blurs out imperfections and gives you that airbrushed effect, look no further. It's designed to give you a soft-matte, poreless look that's perfect for wedding photography. The long-wear formula ensures you'll look just as stunning at the end of the night as you did at the start. Pair this with her Flawless Filer to add more of a glow. This will withstand all of the tears and laughter on your wedding day!
Chanel Vitalumière Aqua Foundation.
This foundation is like a breath of fresh air for your skin. Imagine a foundation that feels like you're wearing nothing at all but still manages to even out your skin tone and give you that lit-from-within glow. Chanel has nailed it with this one. The water-based formula hydrates your skin while providing a natural, dewy finish that's perfect for a romantic and natural bridal makeup look.
Lisa Eldridge Seamless Skin Foundation
Now, let's talk about a foundation that's been designed by none other than makeup artist extraordinaire Lisa Eldridge herself – the name says it all, ‘Seamless skin’! It's all about that second-skin effect, where your complexion looks like a more refined version of itself. This foundation is all about enhancing your natural beauty without masking it. The lightweight formula blends seamlessly into your skin, offering buildable coverage that's ideal for brides who want to look effortlessly elegant. Lisa Eldridge has poured her expertise into this foundation, ensuring that your skin looks flawless and radiant from the moment you say "I do."
IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream:
"CC" stands for colour-correcting, and boy does this cream do it all. It's like your primer, sunscreen, anti-aging serum, and foundation all rolled into one. The coverage is buildable, and it's infused with skincare ingredients that work their magic while you're looking stunning. So, if you're after a foundation that's like a Swiss army knife for your beauty needs, the IT Cosmetics CC+ Cream might just be your new best friend on your wedding day. It is important to note that this comes in original, oil control and illuminating, so they really have all basis covered!
Final Thoughts - Now this is not the extensive list but these are the ones us as makeup artists reach for time and time again! Make sure you have an idea of the sort of coverage and finish you want from a foundation and be sure to discuss this at your trial with your makeup artist!
Our go to Makeup products for Oily Skin
If you have oily skin, finding the right makeup products for your wedding day can be crucial to achieving a long-lasting and flawless look. With the right selection of products designed specifically for oily skin, you can ensure that your makeup stays in place throughout the day, even in humid or stressful conditions. In this blog post, we will explore essential makeup products and tips our Margot and Lace team use that will help you achieve a beautiful, shine-free complexion on your special day.
Skin prep
There is a myth that if you have oily skin you shouldn’t use as many skincare products which isn’t necessarily true. Your skin still requires plenty of hydration and ‘drying it out’ may cause your skin to produce more oils to counteract this. Instead use products that are lightweight with ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid.
Primer
A mattifying primer is an excellent starting point for controlling oil and creating a smooth canvas for your makeup. Look for primers specifically formulated for oily skin, as they often contain oil-absorbing ingredients like silica or clay. Applying a mattifying primer before your foundation helps to minimize the appearance of pores and controls excess oil production, ensuring a longer-lasting makeup application. Some great examples are Laura Mercier Blurring Primer, Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer and Tatcha Silk Canvas Primer.
Foundation
Choosing an oil-free foundation is essential for controlling shine and maintaining more matte finish. Look for foundations labelled as "oil-free" or "matte" to ensure they are specifically designed for oily skin. These foundations often have a lightweight, water-based formula that helps to absorb excess oil without clogging pores. Opt for a medium to full coverage foundation to provide a flawless and long-lasting base. Now this isn’t to say you have to have a matte base all over, maybe focus these products in the ‘oil prone’ areas like the infamous T-Zone! Try It Cosmetics CC+ Cream Oil-Free Matte Full-Coverage Foundation With SPF 50 for more of a light coverage or Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation for a more medium to full coverage.
Powder
Translucent setting powder or a pressed powder is a must-have for controlling shine and setting your foundation. Apply a light dusting of powder to your T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) or areas prone to oiliness. Translucent powders help to absorb excess oil and keep your makeup in place. Baking is one of the trends especially for under the eyes however avoid applying too much powder, as it can make your skin appear ‘cakey’ and not that timeless bridal makeup look. Additionally, carry a compact powder, a travel-size brush, and your chosen lipstick or lip balm for touch-ups throughout the day. Some powders that we lover are Laura Mercier Translucent setting powder, Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish or if you want an added bit of glow Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder.
Oil-Absorbing Sheets
Oil-absorbing sheets are a handy tool to have throughout your wedding day. These thin, portable sheets are designed to blot away excess oil without disturbing your makeup. Gently press the sheet onto oily areas of your face, and it will absorb the oil, leaving your skin looking fresh and matte. When you book with Margot and Lace you will receive a touch up kit which will include some of these for you and your bridesmaids.
Long-Lasting Setting Spray
A setting spray is the final step to lock your makeup in place and control shine. Look for setting sprays that are specifically formulated for oily skin or offer a mattifying finish. These sprays help to extend the wear of your makeup and keep your skin looking fresh and shine-free throughout the day. Mist the setting spray lightly over your face, holding the bottle at arm's length, to ensure even distribution. Top tip: Spray your setting spray after each stage of makeup application, especially after your skin care to lock it all in! For us, there is a clear favourite; Charlotte Tilbury Setting Spray!
Final words: Having oily skin shouldn't be a concern on your wedding day. By selecting the right makeup products and following these tips, you can achieve a flawless, shine-free complexion that lasts from the moment you say "I do" to the last dance. With these products in your beauty kit, you can confidently enjoy your wedding day knowing that your makeup will stay in place and your skin will look radiant and beautiful in every moment.
To Veil or Not to Veil
The decision of whether to wear a veil on your wedding day is a personal one that can add an extra touch of tradition, elegance, and romance to your overall bridal look. Consider these factors to help you make an informed choice:
Reflect Your Personal Style
Consider your personal style and the overall aesthetic you envision for your wedding day. Veils come in various lengths, styles, and designs, from traditional cathedral veils to modern birdcage veils or delicate fingertip veils. Think about whether a veil aligns with your personal style and enhances the overall look you want to achieve.
Complement Your Dress
Consider your wedding dress design and silhouette. Veils can beautifully complement certain dress styles, such as ball gowns, mermaid dresses, or A-line dresses. Consider how a veil will interact with the details, neckline, and back of your dress. Try on different veil options while wearing your dress to see how they harmonize together.
Consider the Venue and Theme
Think about your wedding venue and overall theme. If you're having a formal and traditional wedding, a longer veil, such as a cathedral veil, can add an elegant and timeless touch. For a more relaxed or outdoor setting, a shorter veil or other hair accessories like floral crowns or hairpins may be more fitting. Consider how a veil will complement the ambiance and style of your chosen venue.
Reflect the Ceremony Style
Consider the type of ceremony you'll be having. If you're having a religious or traditional ceremony, a veil can add a symbolic element and honour cultural or religious traditions. It can be a stunning addition during the processional or as you say your vows. For civil or less formal ceremonies, you may have more flexibility in choosing whether to incorporate a veil.
Practicality and Comfort
Think about practical aspects such as comfort, ease of movement, and how you'll wear your hair. Veils can be attached to various hairstyles, such as updos, half-up half-down styles, or loose curls. Consider whether you'll be comfortable wearing a veil throughout the day, especially during photos, hugs, and dancing.
Explore Alternatives
If you're unsure about wearing a traditional veil, explore alternative options. There are many other beautiful hair accessories available, such as hair vines, tiaras, headbands, or floral crowns. These can provide a unique and personalized touch while still adding elegance and beauty to your bridal look. Read our journal about different hair accessories.
Consult with your hair stylist
Discuss your thoughts with your hairstylist and/or bridal boutique consultant. Our hair stylists at Margot and Lace offer valuable advice based on their experience and expertise. They may be able to suggest veil styles that would work well with your dress and hairstyle, or provide alternative suggestions based on your preferences.
Remember, it's your wedding day, and the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, confident, and true to your own style. Whether you choose to wear a veil or not or for only part of the day, the key is to select accessories that make you feel beautiful and perfectly capture the essence of your special day.
